A Cut Above – A look at the SWA Tag Team Division
Well, It’s been a busy couple of months for SWA to say the least, with the major news being the completely unavoidable and insanely disappointing postponement of the Gathering.
Now from my point of view, it’s been extremely interesting to observe how different people in the SWA locker room have reacted to this news. And basically, from what I’ve seen, the reactions tend to fall into two camps. The first camp is those who knew they were guaranteed a slot on the annual supershow, and who are now bitterly disappointed that they’re going to have to wait until 2011 for their chance to shine on Scotland’s biggest stage. Which I fully understand, don’t get me wrong. The Gathering is an event on a completely different scale to anything else that happens on the Scottish wrestling calendar. In the past, people have used the Gathering to springboard themselves from relative obscurity to superstardom, and the show itself has provided the backdrop for some of the most memorable moments in Scottish wrestling history. So yeah, having that dangled in front of you and then cruelly snatched away is bound to rub a few people the wrong way. Not me though. And why is that, I hear you ask?
Well… because I’m in the second camp.
I’m in the group of people who, let’s be honest, probably weren’t going to be on the Gathering if it happened in September. It’s not that we’re lacking the talent (god knows I’m not), it’s just that various factors have conspired to keep us out of what would probably be the biggest show of our careers. Be it injuries, location, inexperience, reluctance to wade into the Canyon/Murphy war, or whatever. Bottom line, there’s a lot of great talent sitting back there in the SWA locker room who are currently rubbing their hands together and literally salivating at the opportunity that this postponement has given them.
So what does this mean for the people in camp two? What’s the master plan to help us secure our spots on the biggest event in Scotland in 2011? Well, I can’t speak for the rest of those scrubs, but I personally plan on making as big an impact as possible between now and the Gathering 4. Which brings me to the main point of this blog. Basically, I’ve been in this business for over 7 years now, and in that time, I’ve become fully aware of my own strengths and weaknesses. Not only that, but I’ve become a pretty good judge of talent, and pretty good at seeing who has the potential to make it, and who’s just wasting their (and everybody else’s) time.
So let me cut to the chase. I’ve decided, in my infinite wisdom, that the SWA tag team division needs a new injection of talent. Don’t get me wrong, there’s a few decent teams out there, but for the most part, the division is filled with scrubs, also-rans and – to be blunt – people who couldn’t cut it without someone holding their hand every step of the way.
I mean, let’s take a look at the current division.
You have a pair of pocket sized comedy scrubs in the Disco Biscuits, whose sole redeeming quality – as far as I can see – is that fact that they have quite catchy entrance music. They seem to be playing the “so much heart they won’t stay down” card quite a bit, but I think a lot of that is a simple case of them being too stupid to know when they’re beat. Unfortunately though, these neon muppets are only the very tip of the SWA tag team iceberg.
You also have two guys like Joe Coffey and Jackie Polo. A couple of lads who, don’t get me wrong, “look the part” (TM), but are way too green and way too dumb to pose any kind of real threat. Yeah, they may have fluked a few wins here and there, and everyone backstage seems to be really high on their potential, but put them in the ring with anyone with just a little bit of experience and brains, and they’re going to wind up looking very, very stupid.
You also have the re-united Lowlanders, which is too depressing a thought to even acknowledge, so we’ll move on.
Falcon and Black Samurai Jr? Well, now things start to get a little personal for me. In Falcon, you have a guy I’ve disliked since day one. In the early days of the SWA, CJ Hunter was the innovator. CJ Hunter was the prodigy, the “future of Scottish wrestling”. And then along comes Falcon, and immediately CJ Hunter gets put on the back burner. “Oooh, but he can do backflips!” “Oooh, but he has a cool mask!” Pathetic. The guy has stolen every opportunity that was meant for yours truly, and left me pretty much nowhere in SWA. And then you have Black Samurai Jr, who seems to be doing exactly the same thing with the current crop of young talent. Half the ability of all the other Area 52 graduates, but gets pushed to the moon because he has a cool mask. These two are a pretty accurate representation of the state of the SWA tag team division. And basically, it’s a mess.
And finally, we have the champs, STI, who I actually have no real problems with. Unfortunately, they’re the ones with the gold, which means they’re going to have to get used to becoming former-champions real, real soon.
And why is that? Well, as of this second, CJ Hunter is officially starting tryouts for a new tag team partner. Everyone who’s seen me wrestle over the past seven years knows my tag team credentials speak for themselves. And looking at the current SWA roster, I see a lot of eager young stars just dying for a little ‘Cutting Edge’ influence to help them step up to the next level. Actually, come to think of it, I can also see a lot of veterans looking for a change of scenery and the feel of some championship gold around their waists.
So here’s how it’s going to work. My CV speaks for itself. Anyone with half a brain knows that teaming with CJ Hunter means tag team gold, and sooner rather than later. So if you’re reading this and it sounds like an interesting proposition, then I’m not a hard man to find. Get in touch, and I’ll let you know if you’re going to cut it as my new tag team co-champion or not.
So the SWA tag team division can consider themselves warned. Because every tag team currently in the SWA needs to start getting used to the fact that no matter how hard they try, no matter how much effort they put into every single aspect of their game, the best they can hope for from now… the VERY best… is second place.
So thanks for reading, and I’ll look forward to an orderly queue forming in the coming days.
I’ve been CJ Hunter. And you’re welcome.
