Nor the Battle to the strong; the civil war continues…
With SWA’s latest trip to Uddingston came a lot of drama. Eric Canyon yet again tried to make the night all about him, but unlike Battlezone, it all fell apart. Particularly with his fight against Scott Renwick.
The two have struggled against each other for months. With Renwick holding the NWA Scottish Heavyweight Championship, the last piece of the puzzle Canyon needs to gain full control of SWA, the champ has had a target on his back, facing nothing but the wrong kind of attention from the Canyon Administration who have thrown various challengers to topple Renwick. With Canyon gaining a sneaky win at Battlezone, and therefore the right to fight for the title at The Gathering, he had a strong safety net but still persisted with Liam Thomson as his latest pick to take the gold. To make matters worse for Renwick, Canyon put himself in the match as the VIP Referee to combat against the SWA Committee’s decision to have the roster at ringside to prevent Canyon aiding Thomson in the match.
But once again Renwick proved himself to be too hard to beat and his sheer determination to keep that belt left Canyon forced to make the three-count against his own man. To make matters worse, after the pinfall PJ Murphy returned from his absense in his hometown to tell Canyon that he’d been inspired and that when the Gathering came, he would be special guest referee when Canyon challenged Renwick for the NWA Scottish Heavyweight Championship.
By the time this happened, Canyon was already in a bad mood. Having challenged the young Lewis Girvin, an Area 52 student who was working as crew on the night, he found himself in a tag match bringing his new bodyguard Mark Anthony to the ring which only resulted in the powerhouse Joe Coffey coming to Lewis’ aid to even the odds. Unsurprisingly, this led to Canyon’s downfall with his team found themselves on the losing end of the battle.
But it wasn’t all bad for Canyon. His SWA Tag Team Champions, the Superior Talent Initiative, managed to retain their tag titles. However, I’m personally unsure if that will hold up in the fans eyes. After a phenomenal display form the Disco Buiscuits, they managed to turn the tables on Grange and Divers allowing Magic Mackie to gain a pinfall over Dicky Divers. The count was made, they were handed the titles and the fans went crazy! It was then that Grange declared that the team was not handing over the titles and claimed that he’d signed a contract that stated the titles could only be defended if the match was main event of the night.
With the match being the opener, Mackie and Freddie da Funk had to hand title titles back to the champions. In my eyes the Disco Biscuits are the legitimate title holders, and I hope that some day soon one of SWA’s tag division manage to topple STI without them backing out of a defeat.
There is good news as we live through the reign of Canyon. When Murphy made the announcement that he was going to be guest referee at the Gathering, he added another stipulation; Winner takes all. If Canyon wins then we’ll continue to live under his rule as he’ll ge his wish and gain total control of the company with Murphy walking away. On the other hand, if Canyon loses he’ll have to take the same bet. He walks away and Murphy will step aside to let the roster continue their careers without the interfering hand of management coming down on them. No more civil war, no more struggles.
But… with this in mind, how many more tricks can Canyon have up his sleeve?
Outwith the civil war, we saw two other young talents go to war with each other as Nikki Storm continued her battle towards the Gathering with a defeat over Sara. Now that Storm has been screwed out of the Gathering spot she was chasing, Sara has had to face the wrath of the Storm. With both women on top of their game making this a match of the night contender, Nikki reached deeper than she ever has before to find a new aggressive streak as she battled against the cunning of Sara with brute force, battering her legs so she couldn’t stand. With it being a Last Ladies Standing match, Storm was able to keep Sara down long enough to gain the win and gain back some of her pride.
The British Championship tournament rolled on when Lionheart gained a defeat over Mike Musso in the last opening round match. Lionhearts win filled a void which will now see him set up to face Falcon in the quarter final match to be scheduled in the near future. With Falcon’s opponent now decided, he faced fellow quarter finalist BT Gunn in a friendly match which saw the two relax and have fun before Gun gained the winning pinfall keeping him on his roll as he gets ready to face Johnny Moss in his next tournament match.
With Johnny Moss scheduled to appear at SWA’s next big event in Johnston, could we see him finally take on BT Gunn in the quarter final match?
And what about Canyon? Will he feel his time coming to an end, or more confident than ever as he gets ready for his Gathering match against Scott Renwick? Either way, we can expect to see him trying to make the night all about himself as the Road to the Gathering continues.
