G2: CALL TO ARMS
Kelvin Hall Information

Built in the West End of Glasgow, near the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, it was completed in 1927. The previous building on the site burnt down in 1925.

It was originally used to house large scale exhibitions, including the Industrial exhibitions of the Festival of Britain in 1951. Over the decades it has also hosted motor shows, modern homes exhibitions and the world renowned Kelvin Hall Circus. Lions, tigers and African elephants all thrilled Glaswegians for years and many to this day can remember that distinctive aroma when walking round the carnival after their circus visit.

The Kelvin Hall stands on the bank of the River Kelvin opposite the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum in the West End of Glasgow. The present building dates from 1927, and replaced an earlier wooden structure that burnt down in 1925. It was designed to houselarge scale exhibitions, but during the Second World War was used to produce barrage and convoy balloons.

Over the subsequent decades it hosted many exhibitions, including the Industrial exhibitions of the Festival of Britain in 1951 and has also hosted motor shows, modern homes exhibitions and the Kelvin Hall Circus. Lions, tigers and African elephants all thrilled Glaswegians for years and many to this day can remember that distinctive animal smell when walking round the carnival after their circus visit.

However once the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre opened, the building needed modernisation. The building was converted to its present use in 1987.

The Kelvin Hall also houses an indoor International Sports Arena, which has hosted many international athletic events, as well as boxing, badminton and volleyball competitions.

It is ideally situated two miles from the city centre in the historical heart of the city's West end. Well served by public transport, the surrounding area boasts bars, restaurants and hotels. The arena provides a centre for sporting excellence for organised clubs and the general public.

A full range of activities is on offer with something to cater for everyone. There's a popular selection of fitness classes. The fitness suite has over 50 gym machines plus a dedicated free-weights area. Unique to the Kelvin Hall is the Indoor Athletics Track, Climbing Wall and Sports Injury Clinic.
