SWA'S AREA 52 WRESTLING SCHOOL
In assosciation with NWA-UK: Hammerlock In association with NWA-UK Hammerlock, the Scottish Wrestling Alliance hosts it's own professional wrestling training school sessions from it's own facility, Area 52, based in Linwood outside Paisley.
The school teaches the art of professional wrestling with the aim of giving you the talent and knowledge to one day compete in a wrestling ring. SWA has brought stars such as BT Gunn, CJ Hunter, Falcon, Scott Renwick and others into the wrestling world and already they've made waves in SWA and elsewhere! No matter your size or shape, SWA can give you an education and a foot in the door of pro wrestling.
As well as the art of pro wrestling, we add more to our program to supplement and enhance your skills in the ring. This can include; health and fitness including weight training and cardio work, amature and shoot wrestling and various mixed martial techniques and more to help build on your wrestling style.
Area 52 has also been host to past NWA:UK/Hammerlock training camps in Scotland after our first successful Hammerlock camp in July 2005 led by Jonny Moss.
The centre itself features a permanently erected sixteen foot ring, which is standard size for all SWA events, a large matted area and free weights, tapes and DVD's to study as well as SWA merchandise available for purchase.
Fully insured and qualified trainers. Leading the training is Conscience; The man who in two years destroyed the Hammerlock roster and was hand picked to attend the WWE's developmental talent scout camp at OVW in 2003. Conscience is skilled in several martial arts and carries black belts in jeet kune do, combat sombo and taekwondo. Trained in pro wrestling by Hammerlock's Andre Baker, Conscience is a former NWA and SCW Scottish Heavyweight Champion, and has held both singles and tag titles over the UK. He has also fought across the US and Canada - competing for the second most prestigious title in the National Wrestling Alliance, the NWA National Championship in October 2005.
Conscience is also a fully qualified, fully insured instructor. Assisting him will be "The Playa" Micken and The Raging Bull who will work alternating sessions. Guest instructors can also include former NWA-UK Champion Johnny Moss and longest running NWA-UK Junior Heavyweight Champion Majik as well as other guests when available.
Why not come along? Beginners are welcome to attend weekend and weekday sessions. Area 52 runs basic sessions on Sundays with advanced classes running on Saturday. Weekend sessions start at 1pm and finish at 5pm. Additional classes run through on Tuesday-Thursday from 6pm-9pm, but must be booked with the training coordinator (check out the contacts page for his info). Weekend classes cost only £10 each, while weekday classes cost only £5.
For insurance purposes, the minimum age of training is 14 years old. There is no upwards age limit.
What Can I Expect Of Training? At Area 52, we emphasise the importance of physical fitness regardless of body size, as well as stressing the often-overlooked fundamentals and basics of wrestling.
Each session will start with a thorough warm up to loosen the body up and also to improve the fitness of the trainees. The warm up can encorporate any or [Photo by Ross Harper/The Big Issue] all of the following: running, press ups, gymanstics/pilates exercises, body weight resistance exercises, abdominal workout, squats, stretching and flexibility exercises. The warmup is challenging, but necessary both for safety and physical development.
For new trainees, they will then be shown the basic break falls (bumps) of wrestling to ensure that they will be able to control their landings in a safe manner and in a way that minimises the risk of injury or pain. Two crash mats are provided to help new learners perfect their bumping techniques, and generally learning to bump will take up most of a first timer's session.
After bumps, a new trainee can expect to learn how to "tie up" properly, and be taught basic chain wrestling from a collar and elbow tie up, such as wristlocks, hammerlocks and headlocks. They will also be shown some basic reversals and may be asked to participate in a short 2 or 3 minute "chain match" incorporating what they've been taught so as to consolidate and re-inforce their learning.
Area 52 also offers a free weights area, and so in an effort to improve the conditioning and physiques of it's trainees, there will often be some weight training carried out for a period of the session. For those unfamiliar with weights don't worry, the trainers on hand are experienced gym goers and will stress the emphasis of technique and form over lifting the heaviest weight possible.
Throughout the session there will be breaks where you can rehydrate yourself or grab a bite to eat, and these breaks are a great chance to get to know your fellow trainees, have a chat and chill out.
Of course, sessions are not planned out to a "T", and there is a great deal of room for improvisation and spur of the moment exercises or drills. Some of the funniest and most worthwhile moments have come about due to this spontaneity and as such we can't promise that what is listed here is exactly what will happen during a session, but overall it is a fairly accurate guide.
